Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD, France): main coordination IRD is a French State institution with a scientific and technological background. It is answerable to the French ministries responsible for Research and foreign affairs. It employs 780 research workers in 27 countries within the inter-tropical region. For 50 years, this organisation has carried out research centred on the relationship between man and his environment in tropical and Mediterranean regions with a view to the sustainable development of these regions. The new Mixed Unit for Research (C3ED/EGER) links the IRD to the University of Versailles (Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines) and concentrates on "the economic analysis and governance of renewable resources and the environment". A multidisciplinary programme on "the governance of fisheries and coastal activity systems in West Africa"(GOVPAC) has been initiated and is based at the IRD centre in Dakar. This unites research workers from North and South in social and natural sciences. The Mixed Unit for Research has strong partnership links with the research organisations in West Africa and the international organisations concerned with arbitration for the conservation of fishing and coastal resources and socio-economic development.
Jean-Yves Weigel, economist in natural renewable resources, and director of research at IRD, based in DAKAR, is the main co-ordinator of the project.
