Parc National du Banc d'Arguin is a state-run administrative organisation established in 1976 to manage a protected area 12,000 km2 which represents a remarkable desert-ocean interface. It was recognised as an important International Humid Zone (RAMSAR Convention) and World Heritage Site in 1989 and harbours an exceptional marine and littoral bio-diversity, namely bird-life and marine fauna (fish, turtles, sea-mammals).There is a permanent population of around 1,500 people based around 9 coastal villages deriving a livelihood from fishing and livestock.
The aims of the organisation are the conservation of bio-diversity and landscape and the sustainable development of resident populations. In order to meet its scientific research requirements, the PNBA has set up partnerships with the Mauritanian institutions concerned (University of Nouakchott, CNROP etc…) and if necessary will call for technical support from foreign organisations.
The national coordinator for the Project is Abdel Kader Ould Saleck, agronomic engineer. |
